Even now that I think I know what is happening in Transistor the story feels like something rich with incomplete themes rather than a complete vision. Don’t get me wrong I love vague storytelling, I regard “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” as my favourite movie of all time, it’s just that films like that feel complete, Transistor feels like its themes aren’t explored properly due to its vague-nature. Once you know what’s happening the story, setting, and characters are clearly thematically rich I just don’t think this vague sort of storytelling benefits a game like this because it does have more traditional story beats which aren’t felt as strongly on a first playthrough as they could be. ![]() It’s interesting although a lot is underexplained, I’m not 100% sure my summary is completely accurate because very little is told to you straight, a lot of the story you have to work out yourself from context, some character profiles, and the occasional vague cutscene. ![]() ![]() Cool, you as Red must stop all of this from happening and get revenge on those who wronged you with the help of your bodyguard who has been absorbed into the transistor and can talk to you from it. This all leads to the Process flying around the city deleting everything and everyone in it as apparently that is their default for some reason instead of anything else. The transistor controls the Process, which are robots which can create and destroy the city, now that the Camerate has lost control of the transistor they can no longer control the Process and Red hasn’t got full control yet so neither can she. Something happens which I don’t really understand but it gives Red some control over the transistor, this stops the Camerata from controlling the tool anymore. Some of Red was absorbed though, specifically her voice. When they try to absorb her, they only partly succeed due to her bodyguard who intervenes but in doing so is fully absorbed in her place. You can absorb people into the transistor to give it power so the Camerata attack Red, a popular singer who has influenced people in the past with her lyrics, influence is enough to cause immediate change in this world so she’s powerful here (also it turns out she’s really good at using a magical sword so I guess that’s pretty powerful as well). A group of people called the Camerata don’t like this system for various reasons and plan on using a tool which looks like a sword called the transistor to change the city to be as they please instead of what everyone else wants. Transistor takes place in a world known as Cloudbank, Cloudbank is a city where everything changes to the whim of the people, everything can be voted on and will be changed to whatever the people want, whatever the people want, the people get, be that the look of a building or the colour of the sky. The story, setting, and characters of Transistor are interesting albeit explored in a flawed way. But before we can get into that, let’s talk plot. ![]() It grabs the action that can be found in real-time combat and the strategy that can be found in turn-based combat and mixes them together into a perfect amalgamation. Transistor manages to combine real-time and turn-based combat in a way that I’ve never seen done before. Transistor is amazing, I think the reason people don’t hold it in high regard is that it doesn’t really bring video game storytelling to new levels like Bastion, Pyre, and Hades all did, what it does to make up for that though is create what is essentially the perfect combat system. That couldn’t be further from the truth, I can’t get enough of Transistor, I’m currently doing a challenge new game plus playthrough, I never do that, I’m a play on normal difficulty and then stop after I’ve beaten the campaign kind of guy. So, I played through Transistor expecting a good enough time but to forget about the game promptly afterwards. Why did nobody tell me Transistor was this good? From what I could tell people liked Transistor but didn’t really look at it as being as good as the other games by Supergiant. The game I’m reviewing touches on topics such as suicide, reader discretion advisedĪs per usual we’ll be in spoiler-free world until I say otherwise.
